Yesterday was a day filled with doctor visits. First, I had a doctor's appointment at 11:00 a.m. and had to wait - I kid you not - 2 hours until I saw the doctor. They were "running behind" AGAIN. Last time I waited over an hour after my scheduled appointment before telling the receptionist I was leaving. But this time I've had it. No one should wait 2 hours after their appointment to see anyone!
Next, Alex had his 18 month check-up. He fell asleep on the way over to his doctor's office, so I had to wake him up - which he doesn't like at all. Unlike my doctor, we were in a room within 2 minutes and the whole thing took less than 15 minutes. Alex had to get a regular shot and I decided to have them give him a flu shot as well. Unlike sarahbethmom 's experience with Sarah and the flu shot, Alex cried more during the routine exam than the shots! He started crying when the stethoscope listened to his heart, and really got pissed when she tried to look in his ears and mouth. He was not a happy camper! Then came the shots, but he was fine with those.
We also went over his 'development' and I had to fill out a form asking me whether or not he engaged in certain activities, such as 'does your child respond to their name', and 'does your child use a spoon to feed themselves'. I'm assuming they are looking for signs of autism or delayed development at this point, but really, some of the things they were asking were a little advanced in my opinion. When did we start expecting so much from our children at such a young age? Now a days parents expect too much from children at an early age, when kids should really just be exploring and learning about their world; not reading 5th grade level books when they are 5 years old.
Alex was born two months early, but for the most part he is caught up. He likes to play with puzzles, blocks and things he can manipulate with his hands. His vocabulary is pretty good for his age. At this point he can say the following words: doggie, daddy, nana, down, no, go, fishy, sticker, cookie, cracker, up. He also likes to sing the ABC song, and knows the tune, but the letters don't always sound like they should.
